I don’t doubt that she has valid experiences and things of note to say, but she keeps downplaying how much an anthropologist can really know and downplaying herself. I dunno, I guess it’s just weird to me that the book seems more about how we should be skeptical of how cultures are portrayed by anthropologists and popular media than anything else.


It’s still an interesting read, but I can’t say everyone would enjoy it. This book is a great read. I bought it for a college class, but as we all know, most books don't actually get read.

Having grown up in Yupik village and heard stories from the elders, I was surprise by not only how much information this book helped me remember, but how much it provided that I didn't know.


An extraordinary and in-depth look into the ancient cosmology of the Yupik Eskimo. Riveting to read and fascinating to observe the ann fienup riordan eskimo essays through its insights. It says a lot about a tough people who eked out a living and created a thriving culture in one of the most harsh environments on Earth.
